President's Message...

Ruben Brown

My Fellow Miconians
There is no better way to assure the survival of our culture, than to train our young people in the ideals of pursuing a formal
education to the highest level. By teaching our youth to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the making
of valuable contribution to charities, to their alma mater, and to give voluntary service. In this way, we can keep our society
strong and ensure a literate and high standard of education. We as Miconians are known and respected for the high standards of
service we always offer to society. As such our alumni association in South Florida has given this type of service for the past
twenty years.
I am excited about the opportunity to lead this organization and to carry on the tradition of providing excellence in leadership
established by those leaders who preceded me. This association can be proud of its many past achievements as can be seen in the
thousand of dollar contributions made to the scholarship fund for needy students. We have given financial and other support to
our college back in Jamaica. We have adopted and given financial support to numerous schools in Jamaica. We have helped and
contributed to many charities here in South Florida. Moreso, we have been instrumental in assisting fellow Miconians as they
assimilate in this country.
Many of us have remained in the educational field and others have branched into other successful careers and endeavors. Many of
us have travelled the world and have been to other higher places of learning. However, none holds such a special place in all of
our hearts as Mico. Our passion runs deep and our interest in our alma mater is always high. Whether, it was the drinking of
the ‘Pug’ or the coming from rural Jamaica to the bright lights of Kingston. We share and relate
to many of the same challenges.
Many of us are batch mates and have made long-lasting friendships over the years. But the true uniting factor for us all is Mico
and what this great institution did for us in launching our careers. For this we are grateful as it is truly what has made us so
successful.
I therefore, call upon Miconians in south Florida to come and join the growing membership. I urge Miconians all over the world
to contact us and visit our website at www.micoalumnisf.org Looking for a batch mate? They might just
be here. Let us continue to do our best for our Alma Mater, Jamaica, and by extension the world in which we live.
Sincerely,
Ruben Brown, President
Mico Alumni Association of South Florida.
